THE DOCKLANDS -SEAN O'CASEY COMMUNITY CENTRE

'Dublin Docklands - An Urban Voyageis a work in progress, commissioned by the Dublin Docklands Development Authority, and due to be completed in the autumn of 2008. The following tale represents research I have undertaken for the project which may or may not be used in the final book.

SEAN O'CASEY COMMUNITY CENTRE

The memory of Seán O’Casey is also recalled in the Seán O’Casey Community Centre in the East Wall. The new Centre has been designed by award winning architects O'Donnell + Tuomey. Opened in October 2008, it offers a range of facilities for the entire community, particularly senior citizens and pre-school children, including a theatre, gym, pre-school, games room, pottery room, gardens and café. The solid block building is distinguished by the circular holes that punctuate its façade. Three sizes of window provide for standing, sitting and full height views out of the building to the street and to the wider city. These windows act as communication devices at a larger scale also representing a community landmark visible from the elevated train lines to the north, the sea to the east and the river to the south. The new centre was commissioned by Dublin City Council and the Docklands Authority.

With thanks to Laura Harty.
